UVA’s Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, headed by Zhenqi Liu, MD, is a top-tier academic program with a nationally respected fellowship training program and internationally recognized for its clinical and scientific expertise. During FY 2015 the division maintained its perennially strong performance in research and education while growing its clinical mission through expanded capacity and services. Highlights include:

• Maintaining steady research funding year-over-year, despite a challenging funding environment
• Conducting a highly successful fellowship match
• Establishing new clinical locations and acquiring a local practice to expand its patient base
• Publishing 57 peer-reviewed articles, in top journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation Research, Endocrine Reviews and Diabetes

Many of the division’s faculty members are included on the annual “Best Doctors in America” and Castle Connolly’s “America’s Top Doctors” lists, and the division continues to be ranked by U.S. News & World Report. Faculty members render service to their specialty’s top professional organizations in a variety of roles. Among their ranks are three former presidents, a vice president and a council member of the Endocrine Society; a former president of the American Diabetes Association; and a president of the International Congress of Endocrinology. They serve as review committee members for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education; as editorial board members for journals; as textbook editors; and as study section members for the National Institutes of Health.
