The Division of Hematology and Oncology experienced dramatic growth in its faculty and clinical and research programs during FY 2014. Reflecting the priorities of the Department of Medicine, Cancer Center, and UVA Health System, the division’s growth has extended the depth and breadth of services it provides to the surrounding community.

Academic productivity across the various disciplines encompassed by the division, including benign hematology, hemostasis and thrombosis, malignant hematology, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and solid tumor oncology, has grown as well. Division faculty hold medical directorships and render academic and scholarly service at UVA Cancer Center, the School of Medicine, and well beyond – including NIH review panels, research foundations, and national and international professional societies and research consortia.

Division faculty, together with colleagues from other specialties and the basic sciences, form the UVA Cancer Center. A National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center since 1988, it is led by Thomas Loughran, MD, an internationally recognized investigator in leukemia who was appointed director in 2013. In 2014, the “Best Hospitals” guide published by U.S. News & World Report recognized cancer treatment at UVA as a “high-performing” specialty—among the top 25% nationally—for the third year in a row. Becker’s Hospital Review named the University of Virginia Cancer Center at UVA Medical Center to its 2014 list of 100 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Oncology Programs—the second consecutive year it has been included, and the only hospital in Virginia to be so recognized. Oncology programs at these hospitals are, says Becker’s, “leading the way in terms of quality patient care, cancer outcomes and research.” Becker’s specifically cited UVA Cancer Center’s use of cancer-specific clinical teams, including pathologists, radiologists, researchers, surgeons and additional healthcare professionals.
