Chief: C. Edward Rose Jr., MD

In the last year, the division has continued its focus on quality patient care in the MICU with the development of educational materials and training related to the “6 in sixty” SEPSIS protocol and by working to incorporate the UVA Health System’s “Be Safe” guidelines into its clinical practices.

The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, led by C. Edward Rose Jr., MD, provides clinical care to patients with a range of pulmonary and respiratory system diseases. These include:

  • obstructive and restrictive lung diseases (e.g., cystic fibrosis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD, interstitial lung disease);
  • respiratory failure;
  • sleep-related breathing disorders;
  • lung cancer; and
  • occupationally acquired lung disease.

The division’s 14 full-time faculty also evaluate patients who may be candidates for lung transplants and lung volume reduction surgery. Specialty labs and programs run by the division include:

  • Pulmonary Function Lab – performs routine tests such as spirometry, diffusing capacity, and arterial blood gas analysis. Others include exercise performance evaluation, respiratory muscle function, lung volumes, lung and chest wall mechanics, and ventilatory drive.
  • Pulmonary and Lung Transplant Programprovides evaluative and transplant care for patients with end-stage lung disease, in order to promote and restore quality of life. The program, established in 1990, uses a multidisciplinary team approach to patient evaluation, selection, and management prior to and following transplant.
