UVA’s Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, led by C. Edward Rose Jr., MD, provides clinical care to patients with a range of pulmonary and respiratory system diseases. The aim of the division in all it does is to provide outstanding care to patients and superb clinical and research training to fellows.

Conditions treated by our faculty include:

  • Obstructive and restrictive lung diseases — e.g., cystic fibrosis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and interstitial lung disease.
  • Respiratory failure.
  • Sleep-related breathing disorders.
  • Lung cancer.
  • Occupationally acquired lung disease.

The division’s 22 faculty also evaluate patients who may be candidates for lung transplants and lung volume reduction surgery.

Specialty labs and programs run by the division include:

  • Pulmonary Function Lab – Performs routine tests such as spirometry, diffusing capacity and arterial blood gas analysis. Other tests include exercise performance evaluation, respiratory muscle function, lung volumes, lung and chest wall mechanics, and ventilatory drive.
  • Pulmonary & Lung Transplant Program – Provides evaluative and transplant care for patients with end-stage lung disease, in order to promote and restore quality of life. The program, established in 1990, uses a multidisciplinary team approach to patient evaluation, selection and management prior to and following transplant.
