United Way Day of Caring

A team from the Department of Medicine’s Human Resources worked at Jackson-Via Elementary School for the United Way Day of Caring in September 2014. DOM HR director Brian Gittens, with team members Kristen Crawford, Christina Hamill, Gail Hundley, A.J. Leo and Ally Mawyer hauled lumber for the school’s fence and shed, primed its kiosk and cut back weeds.Department of Medicine volunteers at a United Way “Day of Caring” worksite.

DOM continued its tradition of sponsoring volunteer work days for Greater Charlottesville Region Habitat for Humanity during FY 2015. DOM work crews spackled and painted, hung dry wall and performed a variety of other tasks to help complete the homes of Charlottesville Habitat partner families; most of these were located in Burnet Commons in Belmont, a mixed income development that is a collaborative effort of Southern Development, the City of Charlottesville and Habitat. “It will transform a long-time City dumping ground into a pedestrian-oriented, sustainably built, 46-unit neighborhood in the heart of Charlottesville,” according to Habitat.

DOM & SOM Host Poster Contest, Conference for Charlottesville Middle School and High School Students

The Office for Diversity at the School of Medicine, in partnership with the Department of Medicine, hosted a poster symposium for Charlottesville High School students on April 3, 2015. UVA med students and SOM faculty provided an assist to the CHS students as they researched and developed their posters. The winners received Amazon gift cards.

SOM’s Office of Diversity and DOM also teamed up to host Buford Middle Schoolers on March 27 for the second annual “Inside UVA Medicine” conference. Seventh graders from Buford experienced the “in-the-round” classroom where UVA medical students learn, visited the Medical Simulation Center, went up to the Pegasus helipad — and had a good lunch! Thanks to everyone in the Department of Medicine who helped organize and staff this event.
