UVA Health System and its caregivers — many of them faculty in the Department of Medicine — have been recognized for excellence by a variety of organizations.

U.S. News & World Report

U.S. News and World Report honored five specialties at University of Virginia Health System in the publication’s 2015 “Best Hospitals” guide — and three of those were in the Department of Medicine: cancer (hematology-oncology), endocrinology and nephrology.

UVA’s Diabetes & Endocrinology program is ranked in a tie for 39th, placing UVA among approximately 3 percent of U.S. hospitals with a nationally ranked program. Four UVA specialties were honored as “high-performing,” meaning they rank among the top 25 percent nationally in their specialties:

Shannon, MD, UVA’s executive vice president for health affairs, commented: “While rankings like these from U.S. News are just one of many ways to evaluate hospitals, I’m pleased to see the hard work of our team members from across the Health System received national recognition. This reflects our ongoing efforts to become the safest hospital in America to receive and provide care.”

Newsweek’s Top Cancer Doctors 2015newsweek

The Newsweek list of Top Cancer Doctors in 2015 featured 16 UVA physicians — four of them from the Division of Hematology-Oncology, including Division Chief Michael Williams. The Hem-Onc physicians included (with their areas of specialization) were:

The American Heart Association (AHA) recognized UVA Health System’s heart failure program with two national quality awards for using treatment guidelines that speed recovery and reduce hospital readmissions for heart failure patients.

UVA Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Center earned the 2015 “Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Award” from the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology Foundation, and was also named to the AHA’s “Target: Heart Failure Honor Roll.”

American College of Surgeons

ACSFor meeting or exceeding 36 national quality care standards, UVA Cancer Center has earned a three-year accreditation with commendation from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons.
