EDUCATION HIGHLIGHT:
Department of Medicine Receives Mulholland Society Teaching Award

The UVA School of Medicine class of 2016 voted to award the Department of Medicine the Mulholland Society’s Departmental Teaching Award, which will be handed out at SOM graduation exercises in May 2016. Established more than 25 years ago by the Mulholland Society and the Class of 1988, it is intended to highlight the importance of departmental dedication and teamwork for effective teaching of medical students, and is given annually to a department selected by the rising fourth-year class, in recognition of superior teaching by that department’s faculty and housestaff.

Why did the Department of Medicine win the Mulholland Departmental Teaching Award? Members of the Class of 2016 offer their perspective:

“The Department of Medicine was focused on teaching at every level. The residents and attendings consistently participated in informal teaching on topics, and their didactics were unparalleled.” — Danny Shook

“The residents and attendings make students feel like an integral part of the team, which goes a long way towards motivating us to learn and be engaged. They go out of their way to make time for teaching important concepts, even when the service is extremely busy.”
— Lauren Evers, Mulholland Society President, 2015-2016

“The residents, attendings, and fellows actually care about passing on knowledge and fostering critical thinking skills in students. They treat us with respect and value our input. They are very easygoing and get along with everyone.” — Member of the SOM Class of 2016

Mitchell Rosner, MD, FASN, chair of the Department of Medicine, extended his congratulations to DOM’s faculty and staff “who work tirelessly to ensure that our students receive the very best education possible. The award is a testimony to the efforts of many, many people.” He especially recognized Brian Wispelwey, MD, “who leads our Medicine clerkship and provides the foundation for the student’s learning on our rotations,” and Evan Heald, MD, “who directs the ambulatory curriculum, has developed an outstanding and comprehensive program for the students, and has oversight of numerous off-grounds clinical sites. It is a huge task that Evan has accomplished with great success, and students routinely recognize this rotation as one of the highlights of their educational experience at UVA.” Dr. Rosner added: “Karen Ward is key to the administrative functions of this large enterprise, and juggles all of the complexities involved with great skill.”
