Welcome from the Chair

DOM Chair Mitch Rosner, MD, presents an award to internal medicine resident Kacie Saulter, MD, on the department’s annual Research & Scholars Day (May 6, 2015).

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Welcome to the website for the Department of Medicine’s FY 2015 annual report. Each year, we take this opportunity to celebrate our collective accomplishments and the achievements of our outstanding faculty and staff.

The Department of Medicine is made up of over 290 faculty members, 100 residents in training, 76 clinical and 12 postdoctoral fellows, and approximately 350 staff employees — the largest academic department at the University of Virginia. Each and every person in our large department contributes to its efforts to provide excellent patient care, educate the next generation of clinicians and healthcare leaders, and promote cutting-edge biomedical research. The reports from our ten clinical divisions and various administrative units presented here, along with the many profiles of faculty and trainees, reflect the extraordinary breadth and depth of skills, passions and personalities of the department and all its people.

Despite ongoing challenges in the research funding environment, and the increasing demands on our health system and providers that are reflective of a nationwide trend, the Department of Medicine achieved substantial improvements in performance in FY 2015 relative to previous years. Our research program has maintained its funding level over the last several years, and our graduate educational programs have continued to expand, attracting outstanding trainees and producing some of the finest clinicians and scientists in the country. In patient care, we are developing innovative clinical initiatives, while at the same time improving our quality metrics. DOM’s overall clinical productivity over the past three years has increased 28%; no other clinical department in the School of Medicine has seen such dramatic growth.

Our department makes substantive and absolutely vital contributions to the University of Virginia School of Medicine, the UVA Health System, the Charlottesville community, and the Commonwealth of Virginia — and we should all take great pride in that. After exploring this website, I hope you appreciate, as I do every day, the intelligence, compassion, curiosity, determination and dedication of our department’s faculty and staff. It is these qualities in my colleagues and friends that make my job fascinating and fulfilling on a daily basis, and for that I am immensely grateful.
