FACULTY RECRUITMENT, RECOGNITION & SERVICE: Infectious Diseases
The division welcomed two new faculty members in 2013; Shandra Day who provides clinical infectious diseases care at Culpepper Hospital, and Jie Liu who does molecular diagnostics for infection, and two new faculty members in 2012; Scott K. Heysell, MD, MPH, whose research focuses on drug-resistant tuberculosis, and Tania A. Thomas, MD, MPH, who researches pediatric tuberculosis and TB diagnostics. Eric Houpt was promoted to full professor in July 2012.
During 2012 and 2013, ID faculty reaped many awards – some in recognition of dedicated teaching, some for superior achievements in scientific research, and some to honor both. Also of note, Michael Rein completed a two-year term as the governor of the Virginia chapter of the American College of Physicians.
The 2013 “Best Doctors in America” list included six faculty members from ID (Donowitz, Houpt, Petri, Scheld, Sifri, Wispelwey); both the Castle Connolly 2012 “Top Doctors in America” list and the U.S. News & World Report “Top Doctors 2012” list included William Petri, Richard Pearson and Michael Scheld among the top infectious diseases specialists in the U.S.
