FACULTY RECRUITMENT, RECOGNITION AND SERVICE: Cardiovascular Medicine
The division’s faculty members represent a range of subspecialties, general cardiovascular disease and prevention, cardiac imaging, electrophysiology, diagnostic and interventional cardiac catherization, valvular heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, heart failure, congenital heart disease, and vascular-related diseases. Cardiovascular faculty serve in numerous leadership roles within the School of Medicine, and six were included on the 2013 “Best Doctors in America” list (Robert Battle, James Bergin, John DiMarco, Angela Taylor, Michael Ragosta, Amy Tucker).
Other notable faculty achievements during 2012-2013:
- James Bergin received UVA Health System’s “Uteam Member of the Month” award in February 2013.
- Jamieson Bourque received an award for Best CCA Poster from the American College of Cardiology in 2013.
- John Dent earned a Master of Science degree in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety from Northwestern University.
- Robert Gibson was reelected as president of UVA Health System’s clinical staff for a second three-year term. Gibson was also voted the 2013 Inpatient Attending of the Year by the Internal Medicine residents.
- Ellen Keeley was an inaugural inductee to the University of Virginia’s Millipub Club, as an author of a research article cited a thousand times or more, for her paper “Primary angioplasty versus intravenous thrombolytic therapy for acute myocardial infarction: a quantitative review of 23 randomized trials,” published in The Lancet in 2003.
- Michael Lipinski was the 2012 recipient of the Daniel Steinberg Early Career Award in Atherosclerosis/Lipoproteins for his paper “Loss of Id3 increases VCAM-1 expression, macrophage accumulation and atherogenesis in Ldlr -/- mice.” It was honored as the best published during 2012 in the atherosclerosis/lipoprotein category in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology. The award is highly competitive, with 618 manuscripts reviewed.
- Pamela Mason was appointed director of the two-year Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology program.
- Margarita Perez, Cardiovascular Chief Fellow for 2012-13, was appointed a medical director of the Charlottesville Free Clinic.
- Amy West Pollak received a 2012 Young Author Achievement Award from the American College of Cardiology Foundation.
- Aditya Sharma received a J.D. Coffman Young Investigator Award in 2012 from the Society for Vascular Medicine.
- Amy Tucker earned an MBA from Harvard University.
