Chair, Dept. of Medicine

I am pleased to share with you the FY 2013 annual report for the Department of Medicine at the UVA School of Medicine. This is our first such report in several years, and we are happy for the opportunity to reflect on our collective accomplishments, especially those of our diverse and talented faculty.

As we map our future, we are guided by three broad commitments. The first is to the power of innovation to bring solutions to health problems, including scientific discoveries at the bench, clinical studies across a spectrum of disciplines, and outcomes-oriented research. The second is to excellence in patient care, and to providing that care in the most cost-effective manner possible. In that regard, the department seeks to be an institutional leader in supporting “population health” approaches to healthcare, which look beyond the individual focus of traditional medicine to address broader health issues that affect entire populations. Our third commitment is to education, and to fostering a culture of learning at every level: in our medical housestaff and fellowship programs as well as our continuing medical education offerings. Complementing these is our commitment to the surrounding community through public service, at organizations like Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville and the Charlottesville Free Clinic.

As you read through the report, I think you will agree this has been a highly productive year on many fronts, including:

  • continued excellence across our clinical programs, with outstanding and innovative patient care;
  • expansion of our basic, translational and clinical research missions;
  • development of new (and refinement of existing) training programs for medical students, residents and fellows;
  • recruitment and promotion of exceptional faculty; and
  • improvements in financial performance.

On a personal note, I am enormously privileged to serve this distinguished department and its faculty, staff and trainees. Our gifted clinicians, investigators, and teachers, along with our dedicated staff, serve as a constant inspiration to me. It is with great pride that I present this report.
