FACULTY RECRUITMENT, RECOGNITION AND SERVICE: Endocrinology & Metabolism

The division’s distinguished faculty have served as leaders of many endocrine professional organizations, including: president of the American Clinical and Climatological Association (Robert Carey, 2001-2002), of the Council for High Blood Pressure Research (Robert Carey, 2004-2006), the Endocrine Society (Robert Carey, 2008-2009; Margaret Shupnik, 2007-2008), of the American Diabetes Association (Eugene Barrett, 2003-2004), of the International Society of Endocrinology (Margaret Shupnik, 2012-2016), and of the Association of Program Directors in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism (Alan Dalkin, 2007-2009); secretary-treasurer of the Endocrine Society (John Marshall, 2010-2013); member of the International Society of Endocrinology executive committee (Richard Santen, 2004-2010); and president-elect of the Endocrine Society (Richard Santen, 2013-2014).
Of the division’s 35 faculty, 20 have clinical duties and spend approximately 40% of their time on clinical activities. In 2013, 11 faculty were chosen for the “Best Doctors in America” list, and 12 for the Castle Connolly “Top Doctors in America” list.
During academic year 2012-13, Changqing Xie was hired as an assistant professor, Susanna Keller and Leon Farhi were promoted to associate professor, and Zhenqi Liu to professor. Gregory Hong, a junior neuroendocrinology/ pituitary physician, was recruited to join the faculty starting in July 2013; Jennifer Kirby was transitioned to the role of associate director for inpatient diabetes management.

- Robert Carey:
- 2012 Excellence Award for Hypertension Research from the American Heart Association (sponsored by Novartis)
- 2012 Edward H. Ahrens, Jr., Distinguished Investigator Award (for career achievement and contributions to clinical and translational science), presented jointly by the Association for Patient Oriented Research and allied organizations at the 2012 Translational Science conference
- member of Board of Directors, American Heart Association
- Ayotunde Dokun: clinical/translation science research award for poster presentation at 2013 annual conference of the Network of Minority Health Research Investigators (NMRI)
- Shetal Padia: 2013 Young Physician-Scientist award from the American Society for Clinical Investigation
- Christopher McCartney: 2012 UVA School of Medicine Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research
- Richard Santen: president-elect, The Endocrine Society
- Margaret Shupnik: elected to four-year term as chair of the International Society of Endocrinology
- Helmy Siragy: honored during 2012 National Volunteer Week
- Michael Thorner, MD: 2013 Fred Conrad Koch Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Endocrine Society, in recognition of exceptional contributions to endocrinology that have helped transform science and practice in the field
- Mary Lee Vance, MD: nominated to the 2013 Rare Disease Research Hall of Fame
