General Medicine, Geriatrics & Palliative Care

plews-oganDivision of General Medicine, Geriatrics & Palliative Care
Chief: Margaret Plews-Ogan, MD

For many in Charlottesville and the surrounding four-county region, with a total population of about 200,000, the Division of General Medicine, Geriatrics and Palliative Care is the primary care provider of choice and their main contact with the health system. In FY 2013, more than 70,000 patient visits were conducted within division clinics.

The division’s motto – “To heal, comfort, teach and learn” – expresses its commitment to providing compassionate, high-quality medical care for adult patients throughout their lifespan, including a focus on the underserved, elderly and end-of-life populations. It also underscores the division’s key role in the School of Medicine as a major source of education and training for medical students, residents and fellows. Faculty members embrace their teaching mission as well as their roles as researchers, exploring terrain that links medicine, bioethics, narrative, and reflective practice.

Under the leadership of Margaret Plews-Ogan and a dedicated team of section leaders, the division is pursuing an ambitious agenda that includes expanding services in chronic illness, geriatric medicine, and palliative care; seeking to be an institutional leader in patient safety; and building on its reputation for excellence and innovation in medical education.
