Department of Medicine Faculty Highlights

The Department of Medicine’s ten divisions have a total of 221 clinical faculty (about a third of School of Medicine faculty overall) and 60 research faculty. The diversity and depth of clinical and research expertise they represent, and the number of lives they touch as caregivers, teachers and researchers, is remarkable.

In 2014, 51 DOM physicians were included on the 2014 “Best Doctors in America” list, of a total of 181 UVA physicians on the list in total. Ten faculty members were appointed to endowed chairs in 2014, and 13 junior faculty have NIH “K” (career development) awards.

Service & Leadership

DOM faculty members serve their institution and profession in countless ways. In the clinical realm, they are medical directors for scores of clinics, and members of numerous hospital committees. Academic leadership is provided at the division, department, school and university levels; and DOM faculty are active in shaping the future direction of their profession through service in national organizations and membership on many NIH review panels. Faculty Development Programs

The Department of Medicine’s Faculty Leadership Development Program, launched in February 2014, is designed for junior faculty members in the early stages of their careers, and aims to give them the knowledge and skills they need to become the department’s future leaders. It consists of 10 two-hour workshops over a period of 10 months, on topics ranging from “Strategies for Leadership Success” to “Financial Literacy,” presented by senior leaders in DOM, the School of Medicine, and the Medical Center. Team-building exercises, networking opportunities, and a one-on-one mentoring relationship with a DOM division chief round out the program. Participants are required to attend DOM and SOM management meetings, which expose them to the inner workings of academic organizational culture.

The K Awards Mentor Program is another Department of Medicine initiative that seeks to provide support for junior faculty. Several times a year, DOM Vice Chair for Research Eric Houpt convenes meetings of “K” awardees—those who hold multiyear NIH career development grants. The meetings provide a forum for sharing ideas, discussing needs, and providing support.
