Neeral L. Shah, MD, FACP, a hepatologist in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, was awarded the Herbert S. Waxman Award for Outstanding Medical Student Educator by the American College of Physicians in April 2014. Dr. Shah serves as associate program director for the Internal Medicine residency program; as co-chair of the system leaders committee for the pre-clerkship curriculum; and as associate director for the transplant hepatology fellowship program. He has had extensive involvement in the development and implementation of the medical school’s new curriculum, called “NxGen.”

Dr. Shah also received the 2013 Mulholland Award for Teaching Excellence in Foundations of Medicine, a UVA School of Medicine award. Recipients are selected by first- and second-year medical students to recognize outstanding lecturers in the basic medical sciences.

Dr. Shah earned his B.S. in chemical and biomedical engineering at Cornell University, and his MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he was also a fellow. He has authored over 50 articles, abstracts, book chapters and review articles.
