Division of General Medicine, Geriatrics and Palliative Care:
FACULTY RECRUITMENT, RECOGNITION & SERVICE

Division faculty members provide on-going leadership for many Department of Medicine, School of Medicine, and UVA Health System programs and initiatives, including: Employee Health, ACTOR (a resident scheduling system), the Brodie Medical Education fund, the Center for Biomedical Ethics & Humanities, the Institute for Quality & Patient Safety, the annual Hook Symposium on Recent Advances in Internal Medicine, and Schwartz Rounds.

In 2014, GMGPC faculty garnered some notable honors. Two of them were appointed to endowed chairs: Margaret Plews-Ogan (Anne L. and Bernard B. Brodie Associate Professorship) and Mohan Nadkarni (Harry T. Peters, Jr., Professorship). Mohan Nadkarni was also recognized by the Virginia Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (VAFCC) with their Physician Volunteer Champion of Health Care award for 2013. The VAFCC — the oldest free clinic association in the U.S. — noted that, “Through your thousands of hours of volunteer work you have continued to serve working men and women who have chronic diseases, yet no health insurance.” Preston Reynolds received a “mastership” designation from the American College of Physicians, which recognizes distinguished contributions to internal medicine. Laurie Archbald-Pannone was appointed a fellow of the American Geriatric Society, a status given to AGS members who have demonstrated a professional commitment to geriatrics and made significant contributions to the field. And Huai Cheng received the 2014 UVA Robley Dunglison Award, given annually by the School of Medicine graduating class to a faculty member in recognition of outstanding teaching.

GMGPC faculty continue to be active in publishing and presenting their research. In FY 2014, 20 faculty members published papers and book chapters; professional meetings at which they presented include:
