Division of Nephrology and Center for Immunity, Inflammation & Regenerative Medicine:
RESEARCH

The Division of Nephrology and the Center for Immunity, Inflammation and Regenerative Medicine (CIIR) are at the forefront of basic and translational research in kidney disease, immunity, autoimmunity, inflammation and regenerative medicine. Together, they have generated more than $20 million in research and training awards over the last five years.

Division and CIIR faculty have active NIH grants, including R01 (research) awards; R21 (exploratory/developmental) research awards; two career development (“K”) awards; and a T32 training grant, renewed through 2016. With a shrinking NIH research budget, younger faculty have to work harder than ever to secure research support; it is particularly noteworthy, therefore, that assistant professors Amandeep Bajwa and Gilbert Kinsey have both been able to obtain NIH career development awards.

Nephrology & CIIR Research Retreat, January 2014

The division and the CIIR held a research-focused, one-day retreat on Grounds for its faculty and fellows in January 2014, with presentations by many of its principal investigators. New collaborative partnerships were nurtured, and plans developed to strengthen the infrastructure of the clinical research enterprise, including the establishment of a kidney tissue repository and database. The retreat also helped facilitate work groups in thematic areas that may, eventually, lead to new collaborative research grants and projects.
