Innovation in clinical care: the artificial pancreas uses reconfigured smart phone technology

The division’s diabetes and endocrine clinical care program achieves perennial recognition. The division continues to expand its clinical mission and the services it offers; in the past year, Jennifer Kirby and Anthony McCall spearheaded the establishment of the Cardiovascular Diabetes Consult Service, for which they serve as co-directors.

Because the UVA Health System is a tertiary care referral center, patients come from a large geographic area, including central, western, and southwestern Virginia and parts of West Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Our neuroendocrine program attracts patients from all over the world. The division’s clinical faculty provide 8,000 to 9,000 inpatient consults at UVA Hospital each year; outpatient visits, which are provided at the division’s main offices in Fontaine Research Park, and at numerous multispeciality clinic locations in the area, including Northridge, Augusta, Zion Crossroads, and Madison, totaled more than 26,000 visits in FY 2014. Additional outreach is offered through the Diabetes Education and Management Program (DEMP), which provides diabetes and nutrition training to patients as well as nurse educators and dietitians.

An important initiative, the Inpatient Diabetes Management Program, was launched in the last year, targeting post-operative cardio-thoracic surgery patients. The program and its co-directors are highlighted here. Incorporating the lessons learned in the first year, the division will expand the program to other critical-care and post-operative units at UVA Hospital; in coming years, the program and its services will be offered in outpatient settings as well, at satellite clinics and via telemedicine.
