Jason and Jenilee Lawrence, with son, Callum

I grew up in a Saugus, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, with my two parents and an older sister. As an avid sports fan, I could usually be found playing a sport (mainly basketball) with the neighborhood kids and friends. I graduated from Georgetown University with a B.S. in Health Studies, then to medical school at Ross University in the Dominican Republic. I completed my internal medicine residency in Stamford, Connecticut, and when my wife, Jenilee, matched at UVA for Internal Medicine in 2010, I spent a year here as a hospitalist at the Transitional Care Hospital. Working with the UVA Pulmonary faculty at the TCH solidified my desire to pursue this field, and I started a fellowship here in 2011.

Why Pulmonary/Critical Care?

Throughout residency, I always loved the fast pace and wide variety of cases seen in critical care. There is something profoundly humbling about making key decisions in the face of uncertainty.

What do you like about the Charlottesville area or what do you most enjoy doing here?

After living in the Boston, Washington D.C., and New York City areas, Charlottesville has been a wonderful change. The laid-back environment fits my personality. I like running on the local trails, spending time on the downtown mall, and eating at my favorite restaurant, Mas.

What are you usually doing on the weekend or in your spare time?

All of my free time is spent changing diapers.

How did you meet your spouse?

Jenilee and I met in college during freshman orientation. We were best friends throughout college and married in 2009.

Favorite vacation spot or recreational activity?

Anywhere with a beach.
