I grew up in Holmdel, New Jersey, a small suburban town just 20 minutes from the shore. I completed the combined BA/MD program at Rutgers University and the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School; the program allows you to finish in 7 instead of 8 years, with the added perk of not having to take the MCATs! I did an internal medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, then went south to Charlottesville, with my fiancé, Nick, to begin a fellowship in Gastroenterology/Hepatology.

Why Gastroenterology?

In medical school, I found the pathophysiology of this area fascinating; I loved that it was possible to visualize pathology endoscopically. I also wanted a specialty where I could have a lasting impact on patients’ lives, as well as continuity in their care.

What do you like about living in Charlottesville?

What don’t I like?! It has a great music scene with both local bands and big-name groups, a surprising number of great restaurants, a downtown mall with something for everyone, and lots of local breweries and wineries. Outdoor destinations are very accessible, and we’ve made a few trips to Shenandoah National Park for hiking.

Why did you choose UVA?

I knew I would not only receive excellent training and clinical opportunities, but would have fun doing it. I love the people I work with; no one takes themselves too seriously – maybe it’s the nature of what we do!

What’s your proudest achievement outside the professional realm?

My garden. Nothing is better than eating food you’ve grown.

Best advice anyone ever gave you?

The enemy of good is perfect.

What about you would surprise us?

I took an improve class while I lived in Philadelphia, and performed in an improve show at the end of it. It was nerve-racking at first, but I ended up looking forward to it because I could get as zany as I wanted.
