Faculty Profile: Elizabeth Gay

GayEI’ve been at UVA for five years, after completing training in Seattle and New York. I enjoy clinical work in the ICU and on consults, and working in the outpatient area in pulmonary hypertension. I’ve also enjoyed helping with the medical school pulmonary curriculum for second- year students.

Why healthcare?

The novel Middlemarch.

What brought you to Charlottesville?

UVA.

What excites you about your work?

On occasion, being able to help someone return to an active, full life.

Proudest/greatest achievement outside the professional realm?

Kindness to strangers.

Most admired person, and why?

Czeslaw Miłosz – an example of writing as an act of heroism.

Best advice anyone ever gave you?

There are two ways to ‘motivate’ people: one is by condemning them for their mistakes, the other is by reminding them of their best selves.

What about you would surprise us?

A fondness for rock music and dancing.
