Division of Cardiovascular Medicine:
FACULTY RECRUITMENT, RECOGNITION AND SERVICE

Cardiovascular faculty serve in numerous leadership roles within the School of Medicine, and six were included on the 2014 “Best Doctors in America” list (Robert Battle, James Bergin, John DiMarco, Michael Ragosta, Angela Taylor, Amy Tucker). About 5 percent of U.S. doctors earn inclusion on the list, according to Best Doctors.

During FY2014, the division hired Andrew J. Buda as Professor of Medicine and a senior heart failure specialist, and Brandy Patterson as an Assistant Professor in the area of non-invasive cardiology. Dr. Buda’s clinical practice includes cardiovascular diseases, heart failure, coronary artery disease and cardiac imaging, and his research interests include heart failure, ventricular function, ischemic-reperfusion injury, inflammatory mechanisms and cardiovascular genetics. Dr. Patterson’s practice includes practice includes general cardiology, women’s heart health, preventive cardiology, high blood pressure and noninvasive cardiac testing, and she conducts research in the area of cardiac metabolism.

Division faculty were honored with 2013 Department of Medicine Recognition Awards in several categories:

  • Rohit Malhotra and Andrew E. Darby for “Outstanding Clinical Care”
  • Michael Salerno for “Outstanding Research”
  • Pamela Mason for “Outstanding Educator”

Other notable faculty achievements during FY 2014:

  • J. Randall Moorman received the 2014 Edlich-Henderson Innovator of the Year award
  • Brandy Patterson acted as a media spokesperson for the division’s Club Red program during February 2014 Heart Month
  • Zhen Yan was active during spring 2014 in helping to establish a Cardiovascular Research Center at Dalian Medical University in Dalian,Liaoning,China; he also has been instrumental in the formation and launch of the Asian Society of Exercise Science
