FACULTY RECRUITMENT, RECOGNITION AND SERVICE

Endocrinology faculty received a number of honors in FY 2014. Two were appointed to endowed chairs: Zhenqi Liu (Kenneth R. Crispell Professor of Internal Medicine) and Helmy M. Siragy (Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professor of Medicine). In addition, Craig Nunemaker, PhD, was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine.

Of the division’s 35 faculty, 20 have clinical duties and spend approximately 40% of their time on clinical activities. Nine faculty members from Endocrinology were included on the 2014 “Best Doctors in America” list: Stacey Anderson, Eugene Barrett, Robert Carey, Alan Dalkin, William Evans, Susan Kirk, John Marshall, Christopher McCartney, and Mary Lee Vance.

Other noteworthy achievements:

• Eugene Barrett was recognized with a 2014 Department of Medicine “Outstanding Research” award.
• Robert Carey received an award from the Endocrine Society for Outstanding Leadership in Endocrinology, and was appointed chair of the American Heart Association’s publication committee. He also received a Department of Medicine 2014 “Outstanding Mentorship” award.
• Ayotunde Dokun was awarded a 2013 Jay D. Coffman Early Career Investigator Award by the American Heart Association.
• Jennifer Kirby was elected to the UVA Faculty Senate, and received a 2014 Department of Medicine award for “Outstanding Clinical Care.”
• Susan Kirk was elected a member of the national ACGME Institutional Review Committee (responsible for the accreditation of post-MD medical training programs in the U.S.).
• Zhenqi Liu was appointed president of the Chinese-American Diabetes Association for a term of two years, beginning in June 2013.
• Richard Santen served as President-Elect of the Endocrine Society for 2013-2014.
• Helmy Siragy was appointed Associate Chief for Research of the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism, and held two visiting professorships in 2014: at the Max Dulbruck Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin, Germany (March 13 – April 3, 2014); and at the Faculty of Medicine of Cairo University (April 5-8, 2014). In addition, Dr. Siragy was appointed a standing member, for six-year term, on the NIH Study Section panel on Pathology of Kidney Disease (through 2020), and served in the following NIH review groups during 2013/14:

• Michael Thorner, who retired in January 2014, was appointed Professor Emeritus by the UVA Board of Visitors
