Alice&Walter-Hoyt

Alice with her husband Walter Hoyt, a pediatric cardiology fellow at UVA.

I grew up in Slidell, Louisiana, about 45 minutes north of New Orleans, and lived in southeast Louisiana until moving to Charlottesville. I went to Louisiana State University for undergrad and medical school, and completed a combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency at Tulane University. My husband, Walter Hoyt Jr., MD, is a pediatric cardiology fellow at UVA.

Why medicine? Why allergy?

I enjoy taking care of children and adults, and I wanted a deep knowledge of medicine, so I pursued both internal medicine and pediatrics. I am fascinated with the human body and how it interacts with (and sometime misbehaves in response to) the environment, especially with regards to foods — so I decided to focus my professional life on allergy and immunology.

Why UVA? What opportunities do you have here?

UVA’s Asthma, Allergy and Immunology division has some of the most creative minds in the field; academically, I have the opportunity to do both bench and clinical research, working with and learning from world-renowned experts. I’ve been blown away by the support and encouragement I’ve received as a first-year fellow.

And Charlottesville is a lovely town, with a unique balance of an excellent academic medical center and a small-town feel, with presidential homes and beautiful countryside nearby.

Words to live by?

“Deeds not words”! This was the motto of the women’s welding team at Delta Shipbuilding Company in New Orleans, where my grandmother worked during World War II. A month after completing training, she and her team received an award for the best production rate making the famous Liberty cargo ships.

What’s something about you that would surprise us?

I was born and raised in southeast Louisiana — and I have no accent!
