YoshidaCynthia

The division was pleased to welcome back Cynthia Yoshida, MD, in 2015. Dr. Yoshida, a former UVA GI fellow and faculty member, has spent the last 10 years building a robust private practice in Charlottesville. She is board certified in gastroenterology, with clinical and research interests that include colorectal cancer screening and endoscopic ultrasound. Her honors include an Advanced Research Training Award from the American Gastroenterology Association, the UVA Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence and the UVA Dean’s Award for Clinical Excellence.

New Faculty

CoplandAndyAndrew Copland, MD, joins the faculty in July 2015 as an assistant professor of medicine. Dr. Copland came to UVA for GI fellowship training after completing his internal medicine residency at Stanford University where he was also a chief resident. His interests include inflammatory bowel disease and small bowel disease. (Go to profile, here.)

HenryZacharyZachary Henry, MD, joins the faculty in July 2015 and specializes in hepatology and transplant hepatology. He sees patients with all varieties of liver disease at the Digestive Health Center and Charles O. Strickler Transplant Center. In addition, he has a specific clinic for patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis; the clinic is run in conjunction with UVA endocrinology and cardiology specialists in order to treat related issues of metabolic syndrome in such patients. His research focuses on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, kidney dysfunction in patients with cirrhosis, and variceal bleeding.

StrandDanielDaniel Strand, MD, joined the faculty as an assistant professor in July 2014 and is certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine. His specialties include but are not limited to advanced endoscopy, esophageal and duodenal stenting, treatment of bile duct diseases as well as diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, gastric cancer and colon cancer.

Faculty Awards and Notable Achievements in FY 2015

  • Patrick Northup, MD, was awarded tenure at the June Board of Visitors meeting
  • Neeral Shah, MD, was promoted to associate professor at the June Board of Visitors meeting. He also received the Mulholland award for the second time for his efforts in the NxGen curriculum.
  • Curtis Argo, MD, received the Department of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award

2015 Leonard Sandridge Award

Virginia Kelly, RN, a registered nurse coordinator at the gastroenterology clinic within the Digestive Health Center and UVA staff member for three years, was a recipient of the 2015 Leonard Sandridge Award — the highest award given to staff at UVA.

Those who nominated Virginia Kelly said:

  • “According to her physician partners, Virginia is an indispensable clinician and teacher in her role as nurse coordinator in our hepatitis C care program.”
  • “Virginia cares for patients with an unmatched passion that knows no limits or boundaries. Her attention to detail has positively affected the lives of patients, family members, colleagues and trainees over her time here.”
  • “As hepatitis C changes rapidly, Virginia constantly maintains her knowledge and works tirelessly with insurance companies and pharmacies to obtain medications.”
  • “In her time with us, over 150 patients have been cured — truly remarkable!”

2015 Department of Medicine Outstanding Staff Contribution Award Recipients
