Endo-labguyDivision of Endocrinology & Metabolism
RESEARCH

In FY 2015, the division maintained its research funding levels despite ever-greater competition for dollars from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Endocrine-related research centers led by division faculty:

Center for Diabetes Technology: Stacey Anderson, MD, medical director

  • The center aims to make diabetes management easier and more effective through the development and refinement of artificial pancreas technology
  • At the center, advanced algorithms are being implemented for continuous monitoring of glucose data and automatic adjustment of insulin delivery, showing that time-in-range can be increased while simultaneously reducing the occurrence of hypoglycemia.

Center for Research in Reproduction:  John Marshall, MD, PhD, director

  • The CRR focuses on understanding and treating reproductive disorders, particularly the underlying mechanisms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • The center conducts investigations in all areas of basic and clinical research in reproduction
  • It is funded by NIH-U54 grant, Specialized Cooperative Centers Program in Reproduction Research
  • The center includes the Ligand Assay and Analysis Core, directed by Daniel Haisenleder, PhD.

The Diabetes Center:  Eugene Barrett, MD, PhD, director

  • The Diabetes Center employs sophisticated biochemical, physical and molecular biologic tools to better understand the origins of diabetes and its complications, and to improve the lives of patients with, or at risk of developing, diabetes.
  • It consists of three core laboratories (Assay Core, Genomics Core, and Clinical Translational Science Core), an Administrative Core and an Enrichment Program.
  • The center’s research focus includes pancreatic islet biology and genetics, the control of plasma glucose in the clinical environment, insulin action and resistance, and diabetes complications.

Virginia Center for Diabetes Prevention & Education:  Joyce Green-Pastors, RD, MS, CDE, director

  • VCDPE’s mission is to improve diabetes-related knowledge and practices of healthcare professionals across Virginia, including physicians, medical residents, nurses, dietitians, dietetic interns and pharmacists, by providing high-quality diabetes education programs.
  • The center also offers increased access to education programs for diabetes patients in medically underserved areas of Virginia, through the use of telehealth technologies.
  • The center develops educational programs targeting persons with diabetes, or at risk of developing diabetes, that are offered in community-based settings such as workplaces, physician offices, fitness centers, and pharmacies.
  • It works in concert with the Virginia Diabetes Council to implement the goals of the Virginia Diabetes Plan (2008-2017).
