Division of Cardiovascular Medicine
FACULTY PROFILE: Pam Mason, MD

I have been at UVA for 15 years. I started out as an internal medicine intern. At the time I assumed I would be here for my three-year residency and then move on. I stayed on for fellowship in cardiology, though, and then an electrophysiology fellowship, and have been on the Cardiovascular faculty for the last eight years. My husband, Rohit Malhotra, is also one of the electrophysiologists at UVA, and we have two sons.

Why education? Why healthcare?

When I was in college, I considered going into teaching. However, I also loved medicine. Being at UVA has allowed me to do both.

What brought you to UVA?

I came to Charlottesville in 1999 to start internal medicine residency. I had no particular ties to the area, but was very impressed during my interview. I have been here ever since.

What excites you about your work?

I enjoy teaching as well as clinical care. Getting to work at UVA has allowed me to pursue all of my passions.

How did you meet your spouse?

Most people assume that Rohit and I met in the electrophysiology world. However, we have been together since medical school, before either of us knew what medical field we were interested in.

Who do you most admire?

My parents. They valued education and hard work above all else.

Best advice anyone ever gave you?

“The answer is always in the patient’s history — it’s more important than all of the technology.”

What about you would surprise us?

I used to spend summers teaching motorcycle skills and safety.
