Quality Improvement Measures

EnfieldK

Kyle Enfield, MD

The division has continued to focus on quality care in the Medicine Intensive Care Unit, including the development of standardized work practices aimed at preventing catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). The Department of Medicine’s Quality & Safety team, in conjunction with the division’s quality liaison, Kyle Enfield, MD, led several quality initiatives in the MICU that resulted in:

  • <1.0 mortality index.
  • 80 percent reduction in catheter-associated urinary track infections (CAUTIs).
  • 50 percent reduction in central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs).

New discharge criteria were also implemented, which reduced the percentage of MICU readmitted patients from 10 percent to 2 percent. A standing nurse-practitioner service was developed, allowing for a reduction in the size of the housestaff service, while maintaining the quality of resident education. It also creates opportunities for unit growth.

The division continued to incorporate UVA Health System’s “Be Safe” guidelines in its clinical practices.

Critical Care

AlbonD

Dana Albon, MD

Dr. Enfield leads the division’s focus on quality care in the MICU setting, including development of educational materials and training related to the “six in sixty” SEPSIS protocol, which involves delivering the “Sepsis Six” diagnostic and therapeutic steps within 60 minutes of initial diagnosis of sepsis. The MICU also implemented family participation in daily morning rounds, which has increased patient family satisfaction as well as nursing satisfaction.

Lung Transplant Service

Dana P. Albon, MD, the division’s second lung transplant pulmonologist, started at UVA at the beginning of FY 2015 (July 2014). Dr. Albon did her fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care at Wake Forest University, followed by a transplant fellowship at Duke University. She works closely with Lung Transplant Program director Max Weder, MD, to support the program’s continued expansion and growth.

Sleep Services Program

DavisEric

Eric M. Davis, MD

Eric Davis, MD, who came to the division in 2014, is the director of the UVA Sleep Disorders Center. He serves as a representative with the American Thoracic Society’s Early Career Professional Leadership group.

Dr. Davis launched a “Sleep Grand Rounds” in April 2015, a monthly interdisciplinary conference featuring the latest in sleep topics. The Sleep Disorders Center is also piloting e-Consults in sleep medicine for routine sleep complaints that are seen in the primary care setting.
