Diana Mosteanu & family

Diana with her husband, Alex Mosteanu, MD, and daughter, Ava, in New York City’s Central Park.

I grew up in Bucharest, the capital city of Romania. It is a beautiful and vibrant city, with architecture and culture that earn it the nickname “little Paris.” My parents are both scientists, in the fields of mathematics and chemistry, and I grew up with a love for science as well. I attended the American high school in Bucharest, and first came to the U.S. when I was 14 years old. My parents live in the U.S. now, and I moved here with my husband Alex after graduating from medical school. Before coming to Charlottesville we lived in Connecticut, which is where my daughter Ava was born. Alex is also at UVA — an internist in the Division of General, Geriatric, Palliative and Hospital Medicine.

Why rheumatology?

I like the fact that rheumatology involves systemic processes, and that the cases are often very challenging. It is an exciting time in rheumatology, with many advances in new therapies, but still many questions to be answered as well. I also appreciate the impact we are able to have on people’s quality of life, through the treatment of otherwise debilitating diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Why UVA? What opportunities do you have here?

UVA is a prestigious program and, of course, a tertiary care center – which, as expected, has given me an opportunity to encounter a variety of pathologies in my first year. When I came to UVA to interview, I was impressed by the people I met, and I loved Charlottesville. Overall, I felt it was a place where I could grow professionally and live quite happily.
