FACULTY PROFILE: ADAM Q. CARLSON, MD

I grew up in Decatur, Georgia, the middle of three children. I was that kid with the chemistry set and specimen jars full of bugs. My initial inclination was to pursue a career in the biologic sciences; but basic and field science can be lonely endeavors–I liked medicine because it combined science with some regular human contact.

I attended medical school at UVA and then headed to UC San Francisco for residency and fellowship. I worked as a primary care doctor the year before I started my fellowship, and thought about Charlottesville and UVA almost every day while in California. I live now, quite happily, within cycling distance of my clinic and the medical center, with my wife and two girls.

Why rheumatology?

It combines general internal medicine practice with musculoskeletal medicine of various types, inflammatory and non-inflammatory. I get to maintain long-term, longitudinal relationships with most patients, who have a wide array of conditions. Perks include regular exposure to the exciting work of our basic scientists in immunology, and the opportunity to perform and teach musculoskeletal ultrasound in our clinic.

What about you would surprise us?

Since being back in Virginia, I have developed an intense interest in brewing beer and fermenting cider from local vintage apples.

What does the “Q” stand for?

My middle name is Quincy. My parents still call me “Quince” or “Quincy.”
