From 1969-1971, he served in the military at the Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, where he was chief of the Division of Rheumatology.

Dr. Giuliano joined the UVA faculty in 1974 as a clinical assistant, then associate, professor of medicine; after a period in private practice with Albemarle Arthritis Associates, he “retired” in 2008 — and rejoined UVA as a faculty member.

Dr. Giuliano’s clinical practice has included a spectrum of patients from children to adults and encompassed a wide variety of disorders, including rare diseases as well as unusual presentations of common diseases. According to Rheumatology division chief Janet Lewis, MD, Dr. Giuliano has been an enthusiastic teacher and a superb role model for the division.

“I have always been impressed by his curiosity and the breadth of his knowledge,” says Dr. Lewis. “Not only is he a passionate teacher, but he demonstrates, by example, the importance of lifelong learning. It is not unusual to find him with highlighter in hand reviewing an interesting article. Given his extensive clinical experience, he can be counted on to provide a real-world, big-picture perspective for our trainees, while not losing sight of the humanistic aspect of caring for complex patients.”

In addition to his clinical and teaching activities, Dr. Giuliano was a founding fellow of the American College of Rheumatology, and is a past-president of the Albemarle County Medical Society. He is also a fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Lewis describes Dr. Giuliano as “truly a master educator and clinician, who practices and teaches the art of medicine. While he officially retired — a second time! — from patient care at the end of June, we look forward to his continued presence at division activities.” Thank you, Dr. Giuliano.
