Santen Ends Term as President of the Endocrine Society

Richard Santen, MD

During FY 2015, faculty member Richard Santen, MD, ended his term as president of the Endocrine Society. During his one-year term, the society’s membership exceeded 18,000 and its international outreach efforts continued to expand. The society also transitions to an enhanced publications hosting platform, integrating its journal content with its website, allowing for a better user experience.

Shupnik Appointed UVA’s Associate Vice President for Research

Endocrinology’s Margaret Shupnik, PhD, was appointed associate vice president for research for the University of Virginia in June 2015. In her new role, she will coordinate and enhance pan-university research on neuroscience and cognitive science; she will also be part of the senior leadership team for UVA’s Office for the Vice Provost for Research. Dr. Shupnik will retain her position as SOM’s senior associate dean for research.

Ayotunde Dokun, MD

Dokun Elected Chair of Internal Medicine section, National Medicine Society

National Medical Association, the oldest and largest African American Medical Society. Their mission is to advance the art and science of medicine for people of African descent through education, advocacy, and health policy to promote health and wellness, eliminate health disparities, and sustain physician viability. His serves for a two-year span, from September 2014 to August 2016.

Stacey Anderson, MD

Stacey Anderson, MD, was interviewed by Reuters Health after her presentation at the American Diabetes Association meeting in June 2015, regarding round-the-clock closed-loop control of blood glucose for type 1 diabetes. Read the interview here.

Liu Serves as President of the Chinese American Diabetes Association

Zhenqi Liu, MD, chair of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, in June 2013 was elected to a two-year term as president of the Chinese American Diabetes Association, a nonprofit organization founded in the United States in 2004 by prominent Chinese scientists from mainland China and the U.S. working in the fields of diabetes, obesity and related areas. Dr. Liu completed his term as president of the association in June 2015.

Dalkin Appointed Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professor of Medicine

Alan C. Dalkin, MD, an Endocrinology faculty member since 1991 and the Department of Medicine’s Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs, has been appointed a Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professor of Medicine. His election to the endowed professorship was effective September 2014.

Sue Brown, MD, was promoted to associate professor and received a Department of Medicine “outstanding educator” award in 2015.

In announcing Dr. Dalkin’s appointment, Endocrinology division chief Zhenqi Liu, MD, said: “Dr. Dalkin has made exceptional contributions to our educational and clinical care missions. He is one of the most productive clinicians in our division, and has received countless clinical accolades, among them inclusion on U.S. News and World Report’s ‘Best Doctors’ list, Castle Connolly’s ‘America’s Top Doctors’ list, a Patients’ Choice award, Compassionate Doctor Recognition, and a Department of Medicine award for Clinical Excellence.”
