Division of Infectious Diseases & International Health
FACULTY RECRUITMENT, RECOGNITION & SERVICE

The Division of Infectious Diseases & International Health has an internationally recognized faculty, including two members of the Institute of Medicine (now the National Academy of Medicine); eight members of the American Society for Clinical Investigation; two former presidents of Infectious Diseases Society of America; two former presidents of American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene; and one former editor of the journal Infection and Immunity.

Molly Hughes Chosen by UVA Residents for American College of Physicians Teaching Award

In accepting the award, Dr. Hughes said:
“I want to thank the residents for choosing me as the recipient of a Virginia ACP 2015 Teaching Award. Our own PGY-3 Samuel Love gave a wonderful presentation at the Virginia ACP Resident/Governor’s council dinner on Thursday, March 5, to present me with the award. It is a tremendous honor; I can’t tell them how much it means to me.

“I’d like to thank our residents for making teaching and learning at UVA so enjoyable; we, as attendings, are privileged to work with such bright, talented, and dedicated residents. As I often say, we’re all learners and teachers for a lifetime — so I thank the residents for all they teach us and for all that we learn together.”

Some of the factors that contribute to the strength of ID’s faculty include:

  • Robust research and clinical activities that provide an ideal incubator for young faculty.
  • Plentiful opportunities for junior faculty to develop their own lines of investigation under the grant support of senior faculty.
  • A large number of endowed chairs, which help foster innovation and scientific growth.
  • A vigorous faculty mentoring plan that includes an annual formal review of each junior faculty member by two senior faculty, followed by a dinner meeting attended by all senior faculty in which guidance for junior faculty is formulated on a consensus basis.
  • An active grants-incubator program in which faculty members present research proposals they are developing to other division faculty, in order to get feedback prior to grant submission.

In 2015, the division welcomed three new faculty members: Christopher Arnold, MD; Jessica Lewis, MD; and James Platts-Mills, MD. Dr. Lewis and Dr. Platts-Mills completed clinical fellowships in the division in June 2015.

In October 2014, Rebecca Dillingham, MD, MPH, was elected to a Harrison Distinguished Teaching Associate Professorship by UVA’s Board of Visitors, for a term of five years.

Also in fall 2014, Greg Townsend, MD, was appointed associate dean for the School of Medicine’s Office of Diversity and Medical Education. In that role, he provides leadership in implementing the School of Medicine’s Diversity Plan, and manages the operational and programmatic functions of the diversity office.
