Why medicine?

My mother is a nurse. Visiting her at work left an impression on me and I found the medical world fascinating. I also liked science. An alternative choice for a profession was to become a teacher. Being at an academic institution is now allowing me to combine science, teaching and work with many different people.

What excites you about your work?

I consider myself very lucky that I have found a profession that I really love. I am trying to teach that to my children. “Find a job that excites you every day since you have to work many hours.”

Being a medical doctor slash scientist is never boring. There are always new challenges — sometimes too many. Each day I am learning something and I can wear different hats: I am a doctor, a teacher and a scientist.
