Anne Tuskey, MD

Anne Tuskey, a native of Virginia, received her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and MD from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond before moving to Baltimore with her husband for a residency and fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Tuskey joined the UVA faculty in 2011, and her clinical practice and research interests are focused on inflammatory bowel disease. She is the medical director of the gastroenterology clinics, and the quality liaison for the division. She is also involved in graduate medical education as co-leader of the GI system course in the medical school, and as a member of the committee on residency education. Dr. Tuskey enjoys yoga, gardening and spending time with her family.

Why healthcare?

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a doctor (forgetting about a brief period of time when I was obsessed with becoming a dolphin trainer). I actually went to medical school to become a pathologist, and first became interested in gastroenterology while studying GI histopathology. I found I most enjoyed interacting with patients, however — educating them about their disease and about making changes to improve their quality of life. That steered me to GI medicine.

What excites you about your work?

I practice medicine because I get satisfaction from helping others. To be able to help others in such a collaborative and stimulating environment is why I practice medicine at UVA.
