J. TERRY SAUNDERS, PhD, RETIRES

J. Terry Saunders, PhD, assistant professor of medical education in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism and long-time director of the Virginia Center for Diabetes Professional Education (VCDPE), retired at the end of March after a long and fruitful career at UVA.

Dr. Saunders graduated from Harvard in 1968 with a degree in social relations, and went on to earn an M.S. in psychology and PhD in clinical and community psychology from Yale. He joined UVA in 1984 as a faculty member in the Department of Pharmacology, where the Diabetes Research and Translation Center — an earlier incarnation of the VCDPE, directed by Pharmacology’s Joseph Larner, MD — then resided. Dr. Saunders became director of the center, and moved with it to the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism in 1991.

Over the past 30 years, Dr. Saunders has worked tirelessly to promote diabetes awareness and education in Virginia and beyond, making significant contributions to the division’s and the school’s core missions in clinical care and fellowship education. Deep thanks go to Dr. Saunders for his outstanding service to the division, the University and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
